Decline in Fall

We sense that it has come already in
the August wind
and in the wild and weeping downpours of
September rain:
autumnal change,
I meant to say.
A shudder ran along the naked earth,
which sadly greets
a suddenly recovered sun.

But that is all now gone
so long as autumn creeps upon
us with unutterable sloth.

The best of all our lives
is ebbing imperceptibly
away. It bids a long goodbye.
Autunno. Già lo sentimmo venire
nel vento d'agosto,
nelle pioggie di settembre
torrenziali e piangenti
e un brivido percorse la terra
che ora, nuda e triste,
accoglie un sole smarrito.
Ora che passa e declina,
in quest'autunno che incede
con lentezza indicibile,
il miglior tempo della nostra vita
e lungamente ci dice addio.
